Fiftieth Anniversary of the Hungarian Uprising

Today is the fiftieth anniversary of outbreak of the Hungarian Uprising, which was brutally crushed by the Soviets. However, the commemerations have been marred by clashes between the police and protestors against Ferenc Gyurcsány's Socialist government.

I was there for the 48th anniversary. It was deadly stuff, loads of sombre programming on TV and T-34s parked around the city to remind people of what the past had been like. We stumbled onto a huge commemoration ceremony in the middle of Budapest which looked very serious.

Never mention "Trianon" to a Hungarian. Apparently it's quite a dirty word.

The Treaty of Trianon after WWI saw Hungary lose a lot of its territory with the consequence that many ethnic Hungarians live outside its present-day boundaries, particularly in Romania (Transylvania) and southern Slovakia.

Kealo, very insightful stuff. Have never read about these sad histories from this side of the world. Wars are miserable.
